Ink and Empathy: Jax's tattoos become a visual narrative of his past, contrasting with the innocence of the kangaroo.

The midday sun, usually a harsh glare on Jax’s weathered skin, felt almost gentle today, like a hesitant pat on the back. He sat on an overturned bucket, the rough wood a familiar discomfort, a cup of lukewarm tea steaming beside him. His gaze, however, wasn't on the tea, nor on the distant, slightly wonky fence he was supposed to be mending. It was fixed on the small, trembling bundle of fur nestled in his lap. Pip.

Pip, the joey. He was a tiny, quivering contradiction, all enormous ears and wide, liquid eyes that seemed to hold the entire universe’s sadness. Jax’s own eyes, usually narrowed against some unseen adversary, softened as he watched the little creature’s chest rise and fall with shallow breaths. Pip’s fur was the colour of dried grass, and every so often, a tiny, twitching nose would sniff the air, as if searching for a scent that wasn’t there.

Jax’s fingers, calloused and etched with a roadmap of his life in bold, black ink, hovered over Pip’s head. The tattoos, swirling dragons and snarling wolves, looked out of place against the creature’s delicate down. They were stories etched into his skin, each one a reminder of a battle fought, a loss endured, a wrong turn taken. He’d always thought of them as armor, a way to keep the world at bay. But now, looking at Pip, he wondered if they were more like scars, visible marks of wounds that had never quite healed.
