Chapter 5
The First Shadow
Aisha secretly takes on demanding night jobs to supplement their meager income, fearing it will affect her studies. She hides her exhaustion, determined to keep up appearances and support herself and Debby.
The fluorescent lights of the university library buzzed overhead, a relentless hum that mirrored the persistent thrum of exhaustion in Aisha’s temples. It was past midnight, and the only sounds were the soft rustle of turning pages and the occasional sigh from a fellow student buried in textbooks. Aisha, however, wasn’t reading. Her eyes, gritty with fatigue, traced the same paragraph for the fifth time, the words blurring into an indecipherable mess. She was supposed to be absorbing the intricacies of fetal circulation, a crucial topic for tomorrow’s quiz, but her mind was a million miles away, replaying the gruelling hours she’d just endured.
Just a few hours ago, she had been scrubbing floors at a local diner, the smell of stale grease and disinfectant clinging to her clothes. The night shift, from eleven to six, was brutal. Her hands, scrubbed raw from harsh cleaning chemicals, ached with a deep, persistent pain. Her back protested with every shift in her posture, a constant reminder of the heavy bins she’d hauled and the endless mopping and wiping. It paid just enough to cover their shared rent for another week, and to buy a few more bags of the cheapest rice. But the cost was steep. Sleep was a luxury she could no longer afford, a fleeting visitor that offered little respite before the demands of the day pulled her back into the relentless cycle.
She risked a glance at Debby, who sat across the table, her brow furrowed in concentration as she diligently highlighted her notes. Debby looked so focused, so full of vibrant energy, even at this ungodly hour. Aisha felt a pang of guilt, a familiar ache that often accompanied her secret labors. Debby knew nothing of the night shifts, of the aching muscles and the constant battle against sleep. Aisha had spun a tale of extra study sessions, of needing quiet time to focus. It was a lie, a necessary one, she told herself, to protect Debby, to shield her from the harsh realities of their financial straits. Debby, with her own family pressures and her innate sensitivity, would worry herself sick. Aisha couldn’t bear that.
