The aroma of overcooked rice and the faint, persistent scent of disinfectant were the olfactory hallmarks of Hall C, the women’s dormitory that Aisha and Debby had come to call home. It was a place where dreams were nurtured amidst the gnawing realities of empty stomachs and worn-out textbooks, a place where the shared struggle forged bonds stronger than any material comfort. And amidst this shared struggle, a beacon of uncomplicated camaraderie had emerged in the form of Kwame.

Kwame was a whirlwind of easy laughter and boundless energy, a stark contrast to the quiet anxieties that often clung to Aisha and Debby like a second skin. Aisha, her brow furrowed in concentration, was tracing diagrams of the female reproductive system in a borrowed textbook. Debby sat beside her, flipping through flashcards, her lips moving silently as she committed anatomical terms to memory. Kwame, sprawled on a battered armchair with his feet propped on a rickety coffee table, was attempting to untangle a hopelessly knotted shoelace.
