The humid air hung thick and heavy, clinging to their skin like a second, unwelcome garment. Each breath was a struggle, a conscious effort to draw in enough oxygen from the dense, verdant atmosphere. The Jeco jungle, so vibrant and welcoming just days before, now seemed to press in on them, its endless canopy a suffocating blanket. Dr. Aris Thorne, his brow furrowed in concentration, consulted his worn maps, tracing lines with a finger that trembled slightly. The meticulously drawn contours, once promising paths, now felt like cruel jokes.

"The ancient texts spoke of a river," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that barely cut through the incessant hum of unseen insects. "A 'vein of life,' they called it, leading to the heart of the hidden city. This should be it." He gestured vaguely ahead, his eyes scanning the impenetrable wall of foliage.

Mateo ‘Mat’ Vargas, his weathered face etched with a familiar blend of concern and pragmatism, stood a few paces behind, his gaze fixed on the immediate surroundings. His machete, an extension of his arm, twitched almost imperceptibly. "Doctor," he said, his tone even, "your texts might mention rivers, but what's right in front of us isn't exactly a navigable stream."
