The salt spray stung Seraphina’s cheeks, a familiar caress that usually brought a sense of wild freedom. Today, however, it felt like a lash, mirroring the gnawing unease that had settled in her gut since Leo had unfurled the tattered parchment. The map, or what they could glean of it, was a labyrinth of cryptic symbols and faded lines, a puzzle that taunted them with its secrets. Leo, usually so decisive, had been wrestling with it for days, his brow furrowed in concentration, his usual gruff impatience amplified.
She watched him now, from the shadowed corner of the captain’s cabin, where the lamplight cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the churning of her own thoughts. His knuckles were white where he gripped the edge of the table, his gaze fixed on a particularly dense cluster of markings near what they suspected was the island’s supposed location. He’d been muttering to himself, tracing the lines with a calloused finger, his sighs growing heavier with each passing hour.
“It’s no use, Leo,” came a voice from the doorway, rough and impatient. It was Silas, the hulking first mate, his face a mask of frustration. “We’ve been staring at this ink-stained rag for a week. If there’s a treasure, it’s hiding too well.”
