The salt spray stung Leo's weathered face, a familiar caress that did little to soothe the gnawing unease in his gut. The ‘Sea Serpent’ pitched and rolled, her timbers groaning a mournful song against the relentless swell. For weeks, they had been chasing whispers, fragments of a forgotten song sung only by the most desperate and the most foolish. Now, the song was starting to resolve into a melody, a maddeningly complex tune woven from the cryptic scrawls on the parchment clutched in Leo’s calloused hand.
“Anything, Captain?” Seraphina’s voice, usually a clear, bright note, was strained against the wind. She stood by the railing, her dark eyes scanning the bruised horizon with an intensity that mirrored Leo’s own. She was a dancer in her soul, a pirate by circumstance, and Leo had come to rely on her sharp observations, a rare commodity amongst the rough, brawling men who comprised his crew.
Leo grunted, unfurling the map further. The ink, ancient and faded, seemed to shimmer with an inner light under the overcast sky. The lines were not merely geographical; they were laced with symbols, glyphs that pulsed with a meaning just beyond his grasp. His fingers traced a particularly intricate knot of lines, a swirl that seemed to draw the eye inward, dizzying the senses.
