The salt spray stung Leo’s eyes, but it was the acrid tang of fear that truly prickled his throat. Thorne. The name echoed in the cavernous space of his mind, a phantom limb of the life he’d desperately tried to outrun. He’d hoped the treacherous currents, the deceptive reefs, the sheer remoteness of this place would be enough to keep the jackal at bay. He had been a fool.

The air thrummed with a new, discordant energy. The island, usually a symphony of gentle rustles and soft lapping waves, now felt taut, like a bowstring drawn too tight. The vibrant greens of the jungle seemed to deepen, the sky overhead a shade paler, as if in apprehension. Leo’s crew, a motley collection of hardened souls who had faced cannon fire and kraken’s embrace with little more than a curse, now shifted uneasily, their eyes darting towards the churning grey sea.

“He’s here,” Silas, Leo’s most taciturn first mate, rasped, his hand already gripping the hilt of his cutlass. Silas’s face, a roadmap of old scars, was etched with a grim certainty.
