The salt spray kissed Leo’s weathered face, a familiar caress that did little to soothe the gnawing unease in his gut. For weeks, the ‘Sea Serpent’ had been a ghost ship, a phantom gliding through waters that stubbornly refused to yield their secrets. The map, brittle with age and inked with symbols that still danced at the edge of his comprehension, lay tucked securely in his oilskin pouch. It had led them here, to this mist-shrouded expanse where the very air hummed with an unseen energy, a promise and a warning intertwined.

The island loomed, not as the jagged, volcanic peak he’d half-expected, but as a verdant emerald, swathed in an ethereal glow that seemed to push back the encroaching twilight. Trees, unlike any he’d ever encountered, clawed at the sky with limbs as thick as ship masts, their leaves shimmering with an iridescent sheen. Strange, melodic calls echoed from the dense foliage, a symphony of the unknown.

“Land ho!” The cry from the crow’s nest was more a gasp than a shout, laced with the same awe that had settled over Leo’s own crew. They were seasoned men, hardened by a life of brutal skirmishes and desperate voyages, yet even their hardened eyes widened at the sight.
