Elara stood at the kitchen counter, a silent sentinel amidst the gentle hum of the dishwasher and the distant thrum of Liam’s car pulling into the driveway. The day had been a tapestry woven with threads of small demands: a forgotten library book, a scraped knee that needed a kiss and a bandage, an urgent grocery list hastily scribbled between answering emails and folding laundry. Her mind, a ceaseless scheduler, ticked through the evening’s potential tasks – dinner, bath time, bedtime stories, the quiet, often lonely, hours that followed. She felt a familiar ache, not of physical exhaustion, but of a deeper, more profound weariness, the kind that settled into the bones and whispered doubts in the quiet moments.

"You could say that," Elara replied, her voice softer than she intended. She watched him, the ease with which he shed the day's burdens, a stark contrast to her own inability to simply switch off. He was a good man, a loving partner, but sometimes she felt as though they were speaking different languages, their realities separated by the invisible barrier of her responsibilities.
