Chapter 11
A Quiet Reckoning
The family gathers, forced together by shared misfortune. Elara observes their vulnerability, the roles reversed. The parents, humbled, finally see the daughter they neglected, their pride replaced by a dawning regret.
The old house creaked and groaned, not with the familiar comfort of age, but with the strained tension of a gathering that was both necessary and fraught. Rain lashed against the windowpanes, a relentless drumming that seemed to mirror the unease settling in the air. Elara watched from the worn armchair in the study, a room that had once been her sanctuary, now a vantage point from which to observe the unfolding drama. Misfortune, it seemed, had a way of leveling even the most gilded of lives. A series of ill-advised investments had unravelled Arthur’s empire, and Caspian, tasked with managing a crucial part of the business, had been unable to stem the tide. Seraphina’s carefully curated online persona, built on a foundation of sponsored posts and lavish lifestyles, had crumbled when accusations of fraud, stemming from a hasty and poorly researched business venture, surfaced. The whispers had turned into a roar, and the carefully constructed facade of their family’s success had shattered.
