He replayed the last few hours, each rewind a fresh stab of self-recrimination. The sudden frantic patting of pockets, the growing cold dread, the increasingly desperate search through the crumpled detritus of his backpack. It was a small thing, a mere trinket in the grand scheme of things, but its absence had carved out a cavernous space within him, a void that swallowed logic and amplified anxieties. He’d always felt a peculiar connection to it, a silent pact of shared energy. Its loss felt less like carelessness and more like a betrayal of a vital, unspoken bond.

The argument had been a conflagration, fueled by his mounting panic and his mother’s weary exasperation. Liam, ever the observer, had stood by, a silent, judgmental statue. His mother’s words, usually sharp but with an underlying current of concern, had become barbed arrows. “How can you be so careless, Opeyemi? It’s not just a toy, it’s your responsibility!” Her voice, usually a balm, had grated against his raw nerves. Liam’s contribution, a quiet, “He always does this,” had felt like a death knell, a confirmation of his perceived inadequacy. Then, the unthinkable: “Go. Go and think about what you’ve done. Don’t come back until you’ve learned to be responsible.”
