Aggie's Fever

Little Aggie falls ill, her breath shallow and her forehead burning. Angela’s fear intensifies. She believes Aggie’s sickness is a direct punishment from God for her own transgression.

The wind howled like a banshee outside their small cottage, rattling the windowpanes as if it meant to pry them from their hinges. Inside, the fire in the hearth sputtered and spat, casting dancing shadows that seemed to mock Angela’s growing dread. Aggie lay huddled beneath a patchwork quilt, her small face flushed a dangerous crimson, her breathing a shallow, rasping sound that clawed at Angela’s heart.

“She’s burning up, Mother,” Angela whispered, her voice tight with a fear that had nothing to do with the storm raging outside. She felt Aggie’s forehead, a searing heat that made her recoil. It was worse than before. So much worse.

Her mother, her face etched with worry, wrung her hands. “Poor mite. She’s caught a chill, no doubt. This weather…” She glanced towards the window, her brow furrowed. “It’s a wicked one, this storm.”
