Aggie's Recovery

Returning home, Angela finds Aggie sleeping more peacefully. Her fever seems to have broken. Her mother smiles, relieved, attributing the improvement to the storm passing and Aggie's strength.

Angela’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as she crept back into the house. The wind howled outside, a mournful beast clawing at the windows, but inside, a different kind of quiet had settled. She tiptoed into the room where Aggie lay, a small, still bundle beneath the patchwork quilt. Her mother sat by the bedside, her face etched with worry, but as Angela watched, a faint smile touched her lips.

“She’s sleeping now, Angela,” her mother whispered, her voice raspy with exhaustion. “And her breathing… it’s easier, isn’t it?”

Angela held her breath, listening. It was true. The ragged gasps that had wracked her little sister’s body were gone, replaced by a soft, rhythmic inhale and exhale. The flushed crimson of Aggie’s cheeks had faded to a gentler pink, and her forehead, when Angela dared to touch it, was no longer burning hot. The fever, that cruel thief of sleep and strength, seemed to be loosening its grip.
