The air tasted of smoke and fear. Not the sharp, clean scent of a hearth fire, but the acrid, suffocating bite of burning villages and the metallic tang of spilled blood. Ugo’s hackles were perpetually raised, a low rumble a constant hum beneath the cacophony of distant screams and the closer, sharper cries of the wounded. He pressed against my legs, a solid, warm weight that anchored me in the swirling chaos. Even in the darkest moments, when the world seemed to tilt on its axis, his presence was a steady beat against my heart.

Prince Vlad, or simply Vlad as he was to me, was a silhouette against the inferno that raged on the horizon. His armor, usually gleaming, was dulled by soot, his face a mask of grim resolve. I saw the weariness etched around his eyes, the deep lines carved by a thousand sleepless nights and a thousand agonizing decisions. This was not the Prince who had once shown me the secret language of the forest, or who had listened with such patience to my childish ramblings. This was the Impaler, the bulwark against the encroaching tide of savagery.

He turned, his gaze finding me amidst the frantic activity of the encampment. A flicker of something – relief? tenderness? – softened the harsh planes of his face. He strode towards me, his heavy boots crunching on the churned earth.
