The air grew thin, sharp with the scent of pine and the metallic tang of distant unease. Prince Vlad’s gaze, usually fixed on the horizon where his enemies gathered, now turned inward, a storm brewing behind those steely eyes. It was a look I knew well, the one that spoke of battles waged not with sword and shield, but in the silent chambers of the soul. Ugo, ever attuned to the currents of my heart, pressed his warm flank against my legs, a silent anchor in the rising tide of apprehension.

“They demand a choice, Amyf,” Vlad’s voice was a low rumble, like thunder held captive. We sat by the crackling hearth, the flames casting dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with the unspoken anxieties of our small world. The flickering light caught the silver threads in his dark hair, a testament to the burdens he carried. “A choice that will shape the fate of this land, and perhaps… us.”

I traced the worn pattern of the rug with my finger, the wool coarse beneath my touch. “What kind of choice, my Prince?” My voice was barely a breath, afraid to disturb the fragile peace that clung to us like morning mist.
