The air grew thin, sharp with the scent of distant woodsmoke and the metallic tang of fear. It was a smell I knew too well, a prelude to the storms that gathered on the horizon, not of rain and thunder, but of men and steel. Ugo, usually a restless spirit, lay coiled at my feet, his golden eyes, pools of molten amber, fixed on the path leading away from our small encampment. He was a creature of instinct, and his stillness was a louder pronouncement of danger than any howl.
Prince Vlad, my formidable friend, was a shadow in the flickering firelight. The usual stern lines of his face seemed etched deeper, carved by an unseen hand. He sat apart, his broad shoulders hunched, not in defeat, but in a weariness that went beyond the physical. His gaze, usually so piercing, was lost somewhere in the dancing flames, a universe away. The weight of his kingdom, of his people, pressed down upon him, a visible mantle of responsibility. I had learned to read the language of his silences, the subtle shifts in his posture, the way his hand would clench and unclench at his side. Tonight, his silence was a thunderclap.
“They are coming, aren’t they?” I asked, my voice barely a breath, careful not to break the fragile peace of the night.
