The wind, that old, familiar friend, carried more than just the scent of pine and damp earth today. It carried a tremor, a low thrumming that vibrated not just in the air, but deep within Ugo’s bones. He lifted his great head, his golden eyes, usually pools of calm loyalty, now alight with a restless unease. His fur, a rich tapestry of earth tones, bristled along his spine. A sound built in his chest, a rumble that was not quite a growl, not quite a whine, but something far more ancient and unsettling.

I felt it too, a prickling on my skin, a cold knot tightening in my stomach. It was the kind of feeling that settled over the land before a great storm, before the sky cracked open and wept. But this felt different, more deliberate, more… hungry. Ugo nudged my hand with his wet nose, his gaze fixed on the distant, shadowed peaks that guarded our valley.

“What is it, old friend?” I murmured, stroking the thick fur behind his ears. His response was a low, mournful sound, a sound that spoke of shadows gathering at the edges of the world. It was a sound I had never heard from him before, a sound that echoed the unspoken fears that had begun to stir within me.
