The scent of woodsmoke, a familiar comfort, still clung to the air, a ghost of the hearth fires that had warmed our days. But the wind, ever the messenger, carried a new fragrance now – the sharp, metallic tang of distance, the faint, sweet decay of autumn’s end. His face, usually a mask of stoic resolve, was etched with a weariness that went deeper than mere fatigue. It was the weariness of a soul that had seen too much, endured too much, and now faced a trial that even his formidable will might not conquer.
