The air, once thick with the scent of pine and the earthy musk of Ugo's fur, now carried the sharp tang of fear. It had been a creeping thing, this darkness, a shadow that began as a whisper on the wind and had grown into a roar that threatened to swallow our small world whole. Prince Vlad, my formidable Prince, the one who had shown me a tenderness rarely seen beneath his fearsome reputation, was preparing for a war. Not a war of border skirmishes or petty disputes, but a war that would test the very marrow of his soul. I, Amyf, a girl of the road, my only true companions the wind and the unwavering loyalty of Ugo, felt the icy tendrils of this encroaching doom coil around my heart.
He sat across from me now, the flickering torchlight casting dancing shadows on his stern face. His armor, usually a gleaming testament to his power, seemed to absorb the light, a dull, somber hue that mirrored the weight I saw in his eyes. Ugo lay at my feet, his large body a warm presence against my worn skirts, but even he was restless, his ears twitching at the slightest sound, his gaze fixed on the Prince.
"The Sultan's armies gather, little rose," Vlad said, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. He rarely used that moniker, the one he’d bestowed upon me in those sun-drenched days of our youth, when the world was a simpler, kinder place. Its use now felt heavy, laden with an unspoken farewell.
