The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, usually sang with the rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of the river. But today, a different melody threaded through the quietude, a sound as unexpected as a sunbeam in a shadowed glen. It was laughter. Not the boisterous guffaws of men, nor the tinkling mirth of court ladies, but a pure, unburdened cascade of sound that spilled from my throat, echoed by the low rumble of Vlad’s amusement. Ugo, ever the silent sentinel, twitched an ear, his golden eyes reflecting the dappled sunlight, a silent witness to this rare, precious moment.

We sat by the edge of the forest, a place where the ancient trees offered a canopy of emerald and gold, and the ground was a plush carpet of moss and fallen needles. Vlad, the formidable Prince, the one they whispered about in hushed, fearful tones, was showing me how to skip stones across the glassy surface of a hidden pond. His usual stern countenance was softened, the lines of worry etched around his eyes momentarily smoothed away. His broad hand, calloused from sword hilt and reins, guided my smaller one, demonstrating the flick of the wrist, the subtle arc of the throw.

“Not like that, little one,” he’d said, his voice a low, warm rumble that vibrated in my chest. “You must coax the water, not command it. Feel its breath, and let it carry your stone.”
