The air in the Prince’s chambers was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the faint, metallic tang of old blood, a perfume I had grown accustomed to, much like the whisper of the wind through the pines or the earthy musk of Ugo’s fur. He lay at my feet, a dark, comforting weight, his tail a slow, rhythmic sweep against the rough-hewn floorboards. Prince Vlad sat across from me, his gaze, usually a tempest of command and calculation, now softened, turned inward. We were adrift in a shared silence, a language more eloquent than any spoken word.

It was in these hushed intervals, when the clamor of court and the shadow of war receded, that our true understanding unfurled. He would trace the grain of the wooden table with a calloused finger, his brow furrowed not with battle plans, but with a deeper, more personal landscape. I, in turn, would watch the play of lamplight on his stern features, seeking the flicker of vulnerability he so carefully guarded. Ugo, ever attuned, would shift his position, a low rumble in his chest a soft affirmation of our shared presence.

There were no need for pronouncements, no elaborate confessions. He knew the weight of his crown, the blood that stained its edges, and the gnawing loneliness that often accompanied such power. I saw it in the way his shoulders slumped when he thought no one was looking, in the fleeting shadow that crossed his eyes when he spoke of his duty. My own heart ached with a fierce, protective love for this man who was both legend and, to me, simply Vlad.
