The air, once alive with the chatter of our days, grew heavy, thick with the scent of smoke and the distant clang of steel. It was a scent I knew too well, a scent that clung to the Prince’s cloaks and settled like a shroud over the castle. The war, a beast with insatiable hunger, had finally arrived at our doorstep, not with a roar, but with a gnawing emptiness that hollowed out the laughter from our lives.
Ugo, ever the sentinel, felt it first. His fur would prickle, a low rumble vibrating in his chest as he’d pace the perimeter of our small clearing, his golden eyes scanning the horizon with an intensity that mirrored the anxiety blooming in my own heart. He’d press his head against my hand, a silent question in his gaze, and I would stroke his coarse fur, murmuring reassurances I barely believed myself. “It’s alright, my good Ugo. We are safe here. The Prince will see to it.”
But the Prince, my formidable protector, was no longer a constant presence by my side. His days were consumed by the machinations of war, by the weight of decisions that carved lines of weariness into his brow. When he did return, it was with a silence that spoke louder than any battle cry. The fire in his eyes, once a steady flame of warmth for me, now flickered with the grim determination of a man forced to become a shadow of himself.
