The air itself hummed, a low, resonant thrum that settled deep within my bones. It was a sound I had never heard before, yet it felt as ancient as the mountains that cradled our village. The blight, that creeping sickness that had choked the life from our fields and silenced the songs of the birds, was receding. Its tendrils, once a suffocating embrace, were loosening their grip, and in their place, a vibrant green was returning, a triumphant blush against the earth’s pale skin.
Kaelen stood beside me, his hand a warm anchor in mine. His gaze, usually so focused on the horizon, was fixed on the burgeoning life around us. I saw the same wonder mirrored in his eyes that I felt swelling in my own chest. The visions that had haunted him, those fractured glimpses of despair and decay, had finally given way to images of renewal, of a land breathing freely once more. The spirits, it seemed, had heard our plea.
“Look, Anya,” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “The river… it sings again.”
