Chapter 17
The Return Journey
With the cure secured, they race against time. The land groans under the blight. Their journey back is fueled by urgency and the hope of renewal.
The air, once crisp with the promise of frost, now hung heavy, thick with the mournful scent of decay. Each breath I drew felt like a gulp of dust and despair, a stark contrast to the life-giving winds that had always sung through our mountain home. The vibrant tapestry of the land, woven with threads of emerald moss, sapphire streams, and ruby wildflowers, was fraying at the edges, replaced by a sickly, grey pallor. Clay Basket, her voice like the rustling of dry leaves, had spoken the words that set us on this path, her ancient eyes holding a knowledge that both comforted and terrified me. “The spirits weep,” she had said, her hand resting on my shoulder, a fragile bird’s wing. “The land sickens, and with it, our people. You, SkyEyes, with your keen sight, and you, Thunder Cloud, with the spirits’ favor, must seek the Sunpetal’s Kiss. It is our only hope.”
