Chapter 7
Chapter 7 — The Weight of Staying
Kayline and Aldren settle into a fragile domestic rhythm as the northeast haze draws closer. Corvus discovers a dead section of forest where nothing responds to Kayline's presence. Vesper blinks and the name nearly surfaces before being interrupted. Kayline takes Aldren to the hot spring, where they share an intimate moment cut short by the house's warning through the leather shutters. Harrow detects something circling the property's perimeter. Aldren confronts Kayline about whether she's preparing him to leave, and she admits she doesn't know. The chapter ends with Vesper landing on Kayline's shoulder and speaking a single word aloud for the first time: 'Edric.'
The thing about living in a house that knows you better than you know yourself is that privacy becomes a theoretical concept — like justice, or mercy, or the idea that you might eat breakfast without being emotionally confronted by your own wainscoting.
Kayline had been awake for eleven minutes. She knew this because the leather shutters in her bedroom had begun their morning flex — a slow, deliberate expansion and contraction of the hide, like a lung drawing breath, like the house was stretching after its own night of work. The shutters did this every dawn. They had done it since before Kayline arrived, which meant the house had either been breathing on its own for decades or had picked up the habit from someone long forgotten. Either way, it was the closest thing to an alarm clock that didn't involve Harrow standing on your chest, which he had done twice this week already.
She lay still and listened. The house breathed. Somewhere below, water moved through the pipes — not the spring-fed system she had installed but the older channels, the ones that ran through the walls themselves, leather-lined and ancient, carrying water from the hot spring at the foot of the stream that ran along the side of her property. The house drank from the spring the way she did: regularly, with intention, and with an awareness of what the water carried beyond mineral content.
