Chapter 5
What the House Knows
Kayline brings Aldren to a secret leather-bound room in the attic, where the house cuffs him and compels a confession. Aldren reveals his empathic gifts and the grief of losing his wife and child in childbirth. The interrogation ends with an unexpected passionate kiss between them, and Kayline asks the house to release him.

She stood at the intersection with Harrow at her side and a brush in her hand and the weight of the morning settling into her bones. The thing on the road had withdrawn, but withdrawal was not departure. It was regrouping. It was resting. It was waiting for her to make a mistake.
