Chapter 31
Chapter 31 — The Weight of the Path
The family walks to the newly formed spring in the dead zone, witnessing the transformation of the landscape firsthand. Along the way, Aldren and Mireth share a quiet moment that deepens their bond, as Aldren helps Mireth navigate the physical and emotional aftermath of the birth. At the new spring, Kayline and Mireth discover a profound connection through the water itself — the two springs are linked, and through them, the two women share an experience of each other's inner landscapes. The baby projects contentment and completion. The chapter ends with the family returning home, their relationships deepened and altered by what they've witnessed.
The boots were by the door. This sounds like a simple fact, the kind of thing you'd find in an estate agent's description between "south-facing windows" and "character features," but in Kayline's house, the boots being by the door meant something. The house wanted them to go out. The house, which had spent the better part of a month humming protective chords and sealing its occupants inside like a submarine in hostile waters, had opened the front door while no one was looking and arranged three pairs of boots in a neat row on the threshold, laces loosened, tongues pulled forward, ready for feet to slide in without the usual morning struggle of wrestling leather over wool socks.
Aldren noticed first. He'd come downstairs for the tea — the tea he'd already made, the breakfast he'd already prepared, the domestic routine he'd adopted with the quiet competence of a man who'd discovered that doing useful things with his hands kept the frequency in his chest from spiking every time he looked at his newborn daughter and remembered cutting her free from Mireth's body with a blade in candlelight. He set the teacup down on the hall table — the hall table that had been bare since the entity's second face had knocked everything off it during the first attack, months ago — and stared at the boots.
"We're being evicted," he said.
