Chapter 17
Chapter 17 — The Weight of the Touch
Kayline and Aldren wake and make love, strengthening the house's harmonic frequency. They prepare to take Mireth to the hot spring for a gentle cleansing ritual. As Mireth opens the door of the spring house, a shadow grabs her hand and speaks through her in the voice of the entity, calling itself the four faces of eternity, Eva consuming. Harrow leaps, the shadow vanishes, leaving a headless deer. Mireth's hand is covered in black streaks, marking her as touched by the entity.
The morning came not with a sudden flood of light but with a slow, grey dawn that crept through the leather-bound shutters like a visitor hesitant to intrude. Kayline woke first, as she often did, her body attuned to the house's rhythms long before her mind surfaced from sleep. She lay still for a moment, feeling Aldren's warmth beside her, the steady rise and fall of his chest, the way his arm had draped across her waist sometime in the night and remained there as if it had grown roots. The house hummed around them—a low, contented vibration that she could feel in her bones, in the mattress, in the air itself. The third note had settled into the foundation overnight, and the house responded by holding its breath in a different way, as if it were listening for something it had never heard before.
She turned her head to look at Aldren. His face was slack with sleep, younger somehow, the lines of grief and worry softened by the hour. She had traced those lines many times now—in lamplight, in firelight, in the grey light of this very window—and each time she found something new. A freckle she hadn't noticed. A scar at his hairline that he'd never explained. The way his eyelashes caught the light when the shutters flexed and let in a sliver of dawn.
He stirred. His eyes opened, and for a moment they held the blankness of someone surfacing from deep water. Then they found her, and the blankness filled with recognition, with warmth, with something that had grown so familiar she could no longer imagine its absence.
