Detective Isabella Rossi felt the familiar hum of the city beneath her feet, a low thrum that resonated with the secrets she was determined to unearth. The murder of Silas Bellandi, the patriarch of a criminal dynasty, had been a seismic event, but the ensuing quiet had been even more unsettling. It was the quiet of a predator observing its prey, or perhaps, the quiet of a meticulously planned transition. Adrian Vale, the nephew, the bookish inheritor, was a puzzle she was intent on solving. His public image was that of a clean businessman, a legitimate entrepreneur dabbling in the shadows, but Rossi knew better. The shadows always clung, even to the most polished surfaces.

She’d spent the last week sifting through the ashes of Silas Bellandi’s life, not literally, of course, but through the detritus of financial records, whispered informants, and the unnerving silence from those who usually clamored for attention. The official cause of death was a heart attack, a convenient end for a man who had courted danger his entire life. But Rossi had seen the subtle, almost imperceptible bruising on Silas’s neck in the preliminary autopsy photos, a detail the ME had dismissed as post-mortem lividity. She hadn’t dismissed it.

Her current fixation was Adrian Vale. He was a ghost in the machine, a phantom of the Bellandi empire. He’d been Silas’s consigliere in all but name, handling the legitimate businesses while his uncle played the enforcer. Now, he sat on the throne, and his ascension was disturbingly smooth. Too smooth. Rossi had spent hours poring over security footage from the days leading up to Silas’s death, searching for any anomaly, any flicker of unease in Adrian’s carefully controlled expression. There was nothing. He was a master of his own composure, a trait that both impressed and infuriated her.
