The rain was a constant, drumming presence against the glass, a percussive soundtrack to the city’s suffocating embrace. From his vantage point high above, Adrian could see the water cascading down the monolithic structures, blurring the sharp edges of his dominion into a watercolour of despair. He traced a droplet with his finger, watching it snake its way down the pane, a solitary journey mirroring his own. Each descent was a reminder of the relentless force of nature, a force he could not control, no matter how absolute his power seemed from this gilded cage.

He turned from the window, the polished mahogany of his desk gleaming under the soft lamplight. Silas was waiting for him, a shadow in the corner of the expansive office, his presence a physical weight. The old guard. The embodiment of everything Adrian was trying to escape, and yet, the very foundation upon which his inherited power was built.

“The shipments from the docks,” Silas began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate with suppressed impatience. “They’re moving slower than a crippled turtle. The dockworkers are getting… antsy.”
