The rain hammered against the penthouse windows, each drop a tiny fist beating against the fragile illusion of control. Adrian Vale watched the city dissolve into a watery blur, a kingdom of shadows and compromised souls. He ran a thumb over the cool, smooth surface of the crystal paperweight, its weight a comforting anchor in the swirling chaos. His uncle had called this place the House of Rain, a morbid jest that now echoed with the grim prophecy of a world drowning in its own filth.

Silas Bellandi shifted in his chair, the scrape of leather a jarring interruption to the symphony of the storm. His presence was a constant, low-grade hum of menace, a reptilian stillness that Adrian had learned to anticipate, if not quite tolerate. “The docks, Adrian,” Silas repeated, his voice a low growl, like stones grinding together. “They’re restless. Asking questions. They don’t like the new way. They miss the old… understandings.”

Adrian finally turned from the window, the bruised purple sky reflected in his eyes. He walked slowly to his desk, the plush carpet muffling his footsteps. He sat, the leather of his chair sighing under his weight. “Understandings are inefficient, Silas. They breed dependency. Predictability is what we need. The men will adapt, or they will be replaced.”
