The rain hammered against the reinforced glass, each drop a tiny fist against the fortress of my ambition. Below, the city was a watercolor painting gone awry, bleeding neon and streetlights into a murky, sodden tapestry. The House of Rain, Uncle Elias had called this place, his morbid jest now echoing in the cavernous space of my own dread. It was a sanctuary, a throne room, and a tomb, all rolled into one.

Elias Thorne stood before me, a trembling reed in the tempest. His face, usually a mask of professional detachment, was now etched with a terror that mirrored the growing storm in my own gut. He clutched the folder like a drowning man clinging to driftwood, its slim profile belying the immensity of what it contained.

“Mr. Vale,” he stammered, his voice thin and reedy, swallowed by the relentless drumming of the rain. “I… I think I’ve found something else. Something… bigger.”
