The drumming of the rain against the penthouse windows had become a constant, insistent rhythm, a percussive underscore to the gnawing unease that had settled in Adrian’s gut. He watched Silas, the old guard, the embodiment of everything Adrian had sworn to transcend, and saw not a subordinate, but a predator momentarily leashed. Silas’s grin, when it finally bloomed, was a slow, chilling unfolding, like a spider emerging from its web. It wasn’t a grin of amusement, or even of compliance. It was a grin of pure, unadulterated anticipation.

“Consider it done, boss,” Silas had said, the title dripping with a sarcasm so thick it was almost palpable. Adrian hadn't missed the glint in Silas’s reptilian eyes, the way they seemed to devour the slim folder Adrian now held. Inside, Elias Thorne’s frantic scribbles, his meticulous, terrifying discovery. Information. Not just the ledger of dirty money, but the ledger of dirty secrets. The currency of the underworld, traded in whispers and blackmail, the true lifeblood of the city’s rot.

Adrian felt a shiver, a cold dread that had nothing to do with the storm raging outside. Thorne, the naive accountant, had stumbled upon the heart of the beast, and Adrian, the reluctant king, was now its keeper. He looked at Silas, who was still regarding him with that unnerving, predatory focus. “Comfortable,” Silas had repeated, his voice a low growl that vibrated with implications. Comfortable, and silent. Very, very silent.
