The bruised purple sky had finally broken, unleashing a deluge that transformed the streets into glistening black rivers, reflecting the city’s neon arteries. From this height, it was a breathtaking, terrifying spectacle, a testament to the power I now wielded, a power that felt less like a crown and more like a shroud. The House of Rain, my uncle had called this place. A morbid joke, perhaps, but tonight, it felt like a prophecy.
Silas was a shadow in the corner of my expansive office, a hulking presence that seemed to absorb the lamplight. His voice, when it came, was a low rumble, like distant thunder. “The shipments from the docks, Adrian. They’re moving slower than a crippled turtle. The dockworkers are getting… antsy.”
I met his gaze, my own a carefully constructed mask of indifference. “Antsy how, Silas?”
