The rain hammered against the glass, each drop a tiny fist against the fortress of my ambition. From the thirty-second floor of the Bellandi Tower, the city below was a glittering, fractured mosaic, a testament to the power I now wielded. But the storm that had been gathering for weeks was no longer confined to the bruised sky. It was inside me, a tempest of conflicting desires and grim realities. The House of Rain, my uncle had called this place, a morbid jest that now echoed with the chilling resonance of prophecy.
Silas had slunk away, a satisfied predator after his veiled threats, leaving me with the lingering scent of stale cigar smoke and the metallic tang of his resentment. He saw my attempts at order, at legitimacy, as a betrayal of the Bellandi legacy. He craved the old ways, the brutal simplicity of fear and brute force. And in his eyes, I was a weak usurper, a boy playing at being a man in a game played with blood and iron. He was wrong. I was playing a different game, one of chess, not checkers, where the board was the city and every pawn, every piece, was a pawn in a far grander, far more dangerous strategy.
Then Elias Thorne appeared, a pale specter at the edge of my carefully constructed world. He clutched a folder like a drowning man clutches a piece of driftwood, his eyes wide with a terror that was almost palpable. The storm outside had found its human embodiment.
