Adrian contemplates the ledger's power. He could expose the corruption and risk chaos and his own destruction, or embrace the darkness, becoming a more ruthless puppet master.
The rain hammered against the glass, each drop a tiny fist against the fortress of my penthouse. It wasn’t a gentle shower, the kind that washes the city clean. This was a deluge, a suffocating downpour that blurred the edges of the world, making the glittering metropolis below seem like a drowning apparition. My uncle had called this place the House of Rain. A morbid joke, perhaps, but tonight, it felt like a prophecy. I stood by the window, the city’s neon veins bleeding into the bruised twilight, and the weight of it all settled on my shoulders, a familiar, crushing burden.
Silas was a shadow in the corner of the expansive office, his presence a physical pressure in the room, thick and cloying like the humid air. He’d been waiting, his patience a thin veneer over a simmering impatience. The docks. The lifeblood of this empire, and already, it was sputtering.
“The shipments from the docks,” Silas began, his voice a low rumble that scraped against my nerves. “They’re moving slower than a crippled turtle. The dockworkers are getting… antsy.”
