Chapter 4
A Mother's Heartbeat
Miles away, Mom wakes with a silent ache. She touches a photo, her heart full of love and gratitude. She's the luckiest mom, even with this distance. She sends another message.
The sun, a shy watercolor wash, began to paint the edges of the sky when Mama’s world started. Not with a song or a bird’s cheerful chirp, but with a quiet ache that settled deep in her chest, right where my laughter used to bounce. It was a familiar ache, like a phantom limb, a constant reminder of the space beside her that used to be filled with my sleepy sighs and tangled hair. She stretched, her fingers instinctively reaching for the empty pillow, a silent question hanging in the air.
She didn’t need to look at the picture on her bedside table. She knew it by heart. My face, all wide eyes and a gap-toothed grin, was etched into her memory, as vivid as the first time she held me. Even now, with miles stretching like an endless ribbon between us, she felt it – the undeniable, overwhelming truth of it all. She was the luckiest. Not because this was easy, oh no. This was hard. This was a silent, constant hum of missing. But because I was hers. Because I existed. Because my small hand had once fit perfectly into hers.
She swung her legs out of bed, the floor cool beneath her feet. The morning air, thin and sharp, carried no hint of my scent, no echo of my voice. But still, she breathed it in, filling her lungs with the world that held me, the same world that held her. She walked to the window, her reflection a pale ghost against the brightening sky. Beyond the pane, the world was waking up, unaware of the small, silent battles being fought in hearts separated by continents.
