The world outside was a kaleidoscope of muted colors, a constant hum of activity that felt both distant and suffocating. Inside, however, the walls were closing in, the air thick with unspoken words and the lingering scent of something I couldn’t quite name, but which felt like decay. This was the landscape of my late teens, a period where the carefully constructed facade I’d presented to the world began to show its first, tell-tale cracks. It wasn’t a dramatic shattering, no sudden implosion that would draw gasps and concerned glances. Instead, it was a slow, insidious erosion, a creeping dampness that weakened the foundations from within.

I remember one particular evening, the kind that settles in with a heavy sigh, a precursor to a night of restless sleep. I was in my room, the door ajar, listening to the muffled sounds of my family moving about downstairs. The television droned, a monotonous soundtrack to my internal chaos. It was the pervasive sense of not belonging, of being an imposter in my own life. I saw my peers, their laughter echoing through the school hallways, their futures seemingly laid out before them like a red carpet. They talked about college, about careers, about dreams that felt tangible, achievable. My own dreams felt like wisps of smoke, dissolving the moment I tried to grasp them.
