The echo. It’s a funny thing, isn’t it? How a sound, once made, can linger in the air, bouncing off walls, weaving itself into the silence until you’re not quite sure where the original noise ended and the reverberation began. That’s how it felt, for so long, with the adversary. It wasn't a roar anymore, not the thunderous pronouncements of my younger years, but a persistent, almost insidious whisper. It was the echo of every doubt, every fear, every time I’d stumbled and fallen.

I remember sitting by my window, the late afternoon sun painting long, golden stripes across my floor. It was a beautiful day, the kind that usually filled me with a quiet contentment. But today, a knot of unease had tightened in my chest, a familiar sensation I’d learned to recognize with a weary sigh. The adversary was making its presence known. It wasn’t a tangible entity, no shadowy figure lurking in the corners of my room. It was a feeling, a pervasive sense of inadequacy that seeped into my thoughts like dampness into old wood.

It started subtly, as it always did. I’d been working on a new project, something that genuinely excited me, and for a while, I was lost in the flow, the hours melting away. Then, as I reread a paragraph I’d written, a tiny seed of doubt was planted. *Is this good enough? Really? Anyone could have written this.* The thought, so small at first, began to bloom, its tendrils wrapping around my confidence. Suddenly, the words on the page seemed clunky, uninspired. The passion I’d felt moments before began to ebb, replaced by a cold, critical voice that sounded distressingly like my own.
