The sun, a benevolent, buttery yolk, spilled over the rooftops of Maplewood Lane, painting the dew-kissed lawns in hues of soft gold. For Mei Child, however, the dawn wasn't just about the arrival of a new day; it was the official commencement of her illustrious career as a spy. Today was her First Spy Day, a designation she had meticulously crafted in her mind, complete with a mental fanfare and a crisp, imaginary salute. The walk to Mr. Thomas’s house was a strategic reconnaissance mission.
