Chapter 2

Kelly's Covert Observations

Mei enlists her best friend, Kelly, to help stake out Mr. Thomas's yard. Kelly, while loyal, harbors her own secret crush on the paperboy, Timmy, and uses the 'mission' as a chance to spot him. Mei interprets every rustle as a clue.

The afternoon sun, a lazy golden orb, cast long, dancing shadows across the manicured lawns of Elmwood Lane. Mei Child, clad in her signature trench coat (a slightly-too-big hand-me-down from her uncle), crouched behind a particularly robust rhododendron bush. Her eyes, sharp and unwavering, scanned the perimeter of Mr. Thomas’s meticulously kept garden. Her best friend, Kelly Silver, a study in quiet concentration, was positioned a few feet away, peering through a pair of borrowed binoculars that seemed almost as big as her face.

“Anything, Kelly?” Mei whispered, her voice a low rumble, like a tiny, determined badger. She adjusted her imaginary earpiece, a habit she’d picked up from watching too many spy movies. Her teddy bear, Bartholomew, perched regally on her shoulder, seemed to nod in agreement with her every strategic move. Bartholomew, Mei was convinced, was a master strategist in his own right. His silent encouragement was the bedrock of her spy career.

Kelly lowered the binoculars, her brow furrowed in concentration. “Just… a lot of green. And a very determined-looking robin. It’s trying to steal a worm from a particularly stubborn patch of soil.” She paused, her gaze drifting towards the end of the street. “Oh! And Timmy’s coming!”

Mei’s head snapped up, her eyes widening with an intensity that could melt steel. “Timmy? The paperboy? Is he carrying anything unusual? A package? A coded message?”

Kelly flushed, her cheeks blooming like the roses Mr. Thomas so desperately cultivated. “No, Mei. Just… the newspaper. And he’s… smiling.” She quickly raised the binoculars again, feigning intense interest in Mr. Thomas’s prize-winning tomatoes. Mei, however, was already analyzing.

“Smiling, you say? A tactical smile, perhaps? Designed to disarm? Or a genuine smile, indicating he’s unaware of the unfolding drama?” Mei mused, her fingers tapping a rhythmic tattoo on her knee. “We must remain vigilant, Kelly. Every detail could be a clue.”

Kelly sighed, a soft puff of air that was nearly lost in the gentle rustling of leaves. “Right, Mei. Every detail.” She scanned the street again, her heart giving a little flutter as Timmy’s bicycle, a blur of red and silver, rounded the corner. He waved, a bright, easy gesture, and Kelly managed a small, shy wave back.

Mei, however, was entirely absorbed in Mr. Thomas’s yard. The man himself, a figure of perpetual grumbles and gardening gloves, was nowhere to be seen. This was highly suspicious. Mr. Thomas was as predictable as the sunrise when it came to his garden. He was usually out there, muttering to his plants, his face a mask of concentration as he coaxed forth perfection.

“He’s not here,” Mei declared, her voice tinged with a thrill of discovery. “This is it, Kelly! The mastermind is absent. This is our chance to get closer, to gather intel!”

“Closer?” Kelly squeaked, her timidity surfacing like a shy turtle peeking from its shell. “Mei, his yard is… fenced. And he has that ‘Beware of the Gnome’ sign. Remember what happened to the gnome?”

Mei waved a dismissive hand. “That was a diversionary tactic. The gnome was a decoy. We need to get inside. We need to observe his… operations… from the inside.”

“But… we’ll get in trouble!” Kelly protested, her eyes wide. “My mom said if I climb over Mr. Thomas’s fence again, she’s going to ban me from ice cream for a month.”

Mei turned to her friend, her expression earnest. “Kelly, think of the intel! Mr. Thomas is acting suspiciously. He’s been buying strange things from the hardware store – bags of what looked like… fertilizer… but they were suspiciously dark. And he’s been out late at night, digging. Digging! What is he burying, Kelly? What is he trying to hide?”

Kelly chewed on her lip. She trusted Mei, of course. Mei was her best friend, her partner in crime-solving, her… well, her spy idol. But Mei’s theories sometimes spiraled further than the tallest oak tree. Still, the thought of Mr. Thomas burying secrets was intriguing, even if it was mostly fueled by Mei’s overactive imagination.

“He did look a bit… shifty… the other day,” Kelly admitted, recalling Mr. Thomas fumbling with a large, heavy sack that had fallen from his wheelbarrow. “He sort of… scowled at me when I looked at it.”

“Exactly!” Mei exclaimed, her eyes gleaming. “He’s trying to conceal his activities! We need to find out what he’s doing. Operation: Garden Infiltration is a go.”

Kelly gulped. “Are you sure about this, Mei? What if he catches us?”

“We’ll have an alibi,” Mei said, already formulating a plan. “We’ll say we were… admiring his roses. From the outside, of course. And if he asks why we were so close, we’ll say we were… looking for a lost ladybug.”

Kelly managed a weak smile. “A lost ladybug. Right.” She glanced down the street again. Timmy was long gone, leaving behind only the faint scent of freshly printed paper and a lingering warmth in Kelly’s chest.

Mei, oblivious to Kelly’s internal musings, was already scouting for a weakness in the fence. “Aha!” she declared, pointing to a section where a climbing rose had grown a little too enthusiastically, creating a natural ladder. “The perfect ingress point.”

With a shared, nervous glance, Mei and Kelly approached the fence. Mei, with surprising agility, scrambled up, her trench coat snagging slightly on a thorny branch. Kelly followed, her movements more hesitant, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

Once inside, they found themselves in a verdant wonderland. But it wasn’t the beauty that captivated Mei; it was the potential for clues. Every overturned pot, every stray trowel, every patch of freshly dug earth was a puzzle piece.

“Look!” Mei whispered, pointing to a small, muddy shovel leaning against a watering can. “Freshly used. And the soil on it… it’s dark. Just like the bags!”

Kelly peered at the shovel. It looked… normal. Muddy, yes, but what else would a shovel be? “It’s just dirt, Mei.”

“Ah, but *what kind* of dirt, Kelly?” Mei countered, her voice hushed with importance. She knelt down, examining a small pile of earth near a bed of vibrant red tulips. “This soil is richer. Darker. It’s not the usual soil from around here. This is… special soil.”

She carefully scooped a small amount into a tiny, Ziploc bag she produced from her pocket. “Evidence,” she announced triumphantly. “We’ll analyze this later. Under magnification.”

Kelly, meanwhile, was distracted by something else. Near the back fence, partially hidden by a sprawling lavender bush, was a collection of peculiar items. There were several large, empty burlap sacks, similar to the ones Mei had seen Mr. Thomas carrying. And next to them, a discarded, slightly crumpled flyer.

“Mei, look at this,” Kelly said, picking up the flyer. It was for the Elmwood Community Talent Show. Mr. Thomas’s name was listed amongst the performers, under the category of “Surprise Act.”

Mei took the flyer, her brow furrowed. “Talent show? What kind of talent does Mr. Thomas have? Does he jugglen? Sing opera? Perform… espionage?”

Kelly giggled. “I don’t know. He’s always so grumpy. It’s hard to imagine him doing anything… fun.”

Mei’s eyes narrowed. “This could be a cover, Kelly. A diversion. He’s practicing for something… clandestine. Something that requires… special soil.” She looked at the burlap sacks. “Perhaps he’s growing something… illicit. Something that requires a specific, dark soil to thrive.”

A sudden rustle from the shed at the back of the garden made both girls freeze. Mei’s hand shot to her chest, her eyes wide. “Did you hear that?”

Kelly nodded, her breath catching in her throat.

“The mastermind returns!” Mei hissed, pulling Kelly behind a towering sunflower. “We need to observe. Gather intel. Bartholomew, are you seeing this?” Bartholomew, as always, remained stoic, his button eyes fixed straight ahead.

The shed door creaked open, and Mr. Thomas emerged. He was wearing a rather flamboyant, sequined cape over his usual gardening attire, and he was holding… a ukulele.

Mei and Kelly exchanged bewildered glances.

Mr. Thomas, apparently alone, began to strum the ukulele with surprising dexterity, humming a jaunty tune. He then launched into a surprisingly energetic, if slightly off-key, rendition of a popular song. He swayed, he twirled, he even attempted a rather wobbly high kick.

Mei stared, utterly dumbfounded. This was not the behavior of a criminal mastermind. This was… unexpected.

“He’s… singing?” Kelly whispered, a hint of amusement in her voice.

“This is a masterful deception!” Mei declared, though her voice lacked its usual conviction. “He’s pretending to be… a performer… to throw us off his scent! The singing, the ukulele… it’s all a ruse! He’s probably practicing his escape routes while he’s at it!”

Mr. Thomas, oblivious to the spies lurking behind the sunflower, finished his song with a flourish, bowing deeply to an imaginary audience. He then sighed, a long, weary sound, and began to pack his ukulele back into its case. He picked up one of the burlap sacks, and with a grunt, heaved it into his wheelbarrow.

“That’s it!” Mei whispered, her mind racing. “The sacks! They’re not for… illegal plants. They’re for… transporting something! Something important to his… performance!”

Mr. Thomas then proceeded to wheel the barrow, laden with sacks, towards the front of his property. Mei and Kelly watched, their hearts pounding with anticipation. Where was he going? What was he transporting?

As Mr. Thomas reached the sidewalk, he paused. He looked up and down the street, as if checking for observers. Then, with a furtive glance, he carefully placed one of the burlap sacks onto the curb, right next to a pile of ordinary garden waste. He then turned and wheeled the rest of the sacks back into his yard, disappearing into the shed once more.

Mei’s eyes widened. “He’s abandoned a sack! He’s left a clue! This is it, Kelly! The final piece of the puzzle!”

Kelly, however, was more concerned about the potential for being caught. “Mei, he’s coming back! We need to go!”

But Mei was already darting from behind the sunflower, her gaze fixed on the discarded burlap sack. “This is it, Kelly! The truth will be revealed!”

Kelly, torn between her loyalty to Mei and her innate sense of self-preservation, hesitated for a fraction of a second before scrambling after her friend. They had infiltrated the garden, gathered evidence, and now, a discarded clue. The Hilarious Haul of Mei’s Investigations was just getting started, though the mystery of Mr. Thomas’s dark soil and clandestine planting was about to take a decidedly unexpected turn. As they scurried away from the scene of the 'crime', Bartholomew, perched on Mei's shoulder, seemed to offer a silent, knowing wink.
