The air in the Forbidden Archive was thick with the scent of decaying parchment and something else, something sharp and metallic that prickled the back of my throat. Ryan had found the entrance, a barely perceptible shimmer behind a bookshelf groaning under the weight of forgotten histories, tucked away in the deepest, dustiest corner of the Grand Library. Tony, of course, had been surprisingly adept at navigating the labyrinthine passages that led us here, his usual flippancy replaced with a quiet, almost unnerving focus.

“Careful where you step,” Tony murmured, his voice a low rasp that seemed to echo in the oppressive silence. “This place… it remembers.”

I didn’t need him to tell me. Every shadow seemed to writhe with unseen energy, every whisper of dust felt like a phantom touch. My own magic, usually a restless beast within me, was a coiled viper, thrumming with a mixture of fear and morbid curiosity. This was it, the place where answers were supposed to lie, where the truth of what I was, what I could do, might finally be revealed.
