The alley reeked of stale ale and desperation, a typical Tuesday night in this forgotten corner of the city. I hunched deeper into my cloak, the rough wool a poor imitation of the sanctuary I craved. The Obsidian Hand was closing in, I could feel it, a cold tendril of dread coiling in my gut. Every shadow seemed to writhe with their presence, every distant shout a harbinger of capture. My magic, the wild, untamed thing that had erupted within me, was a beacon, and I was the moth drawn to a flame that would surely consume me. I’d tried to control it, to cage it, but it was like trying to hold back the tide with cupped hands. It surged, it lashed out, and it terrified me.

A ripple disturbed the stagnant air before me, coalescing into a figure that defied logic. He was impossibly thin, dressed in motley that shimmered with a thousand shifting hues, each fold a canvas for impossible geometries. His face was a mask of painted smiles and sorrowful eyes, his movements a series of jerky, unpredictable gestures. He hummed a tune that was both discordant and eerily familiar, a melody that scraped at the edges of my memory.

“Lost, little storm?” he chirped, his voice like the tinkling of shattered glass. He stepped closer, his painted eyes fixated on me, and I felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with the Obsidian Hand. This man… he *saw* me. Not just the scared boy in the alley, but the tempest churning beneath.
