The cobblestones of the alleyway slicked with a recent rain offered little purchase as I scrambled, my breath ragged, a raw ache in my lungs. Behind me, the guttural roar of something ancient and terrible echoed, a sound that vibrated in my very bones. Ryan’s hand, surprisingly strong, snagged my tunic, yanking me forward, her face a mask of grim determination. “Faster, Kael! They’re not playing games!”

The “they” were the Obsidian Hand, a name whispered with a mixture of fear and reverence in the hushed circles of magic. I’d seen their symbol, a stylized, clenched fist carved into obsidian, etched onto the cloaks of the figures who’d shattered the quiet of the old library. They moved with a chilling efficiency, a synchronized ballet of destruction. One moment, the air had been thick with the scent of aging parchment and forgotten spells; the next, it was rent by the shriek of tearing metal and the smell of ozone. They hadn’t been there to arrest me, not exactly. They’d been there to *eradicate*.

A flash of emerald light erupted from the alley mouth, bathing the narrow passage in a sickly, phosphorescent glow. The stone walls groaned, a spiderweb of cracks snaking across their surface. “Shields up!” Ryan yelled, her voice strained. I felt a prickling sensation on my skin, a familiar unease as the raw, untamed force within me thrummed, wanting to lash out, to answer the aggression with its own brutal embrace. I fought it down, a constant, draining battle.
