The air in the hidden chamber crackled, not with the usual comforting hum of ambient magic, but with something far more volatile. Ryan, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere physical exhaustion, gestured for me to focus. "Again, Kael. Breathe. Visualize the shield, not the storm."

I gritted my teeth, sweat beading on my forehead. The raw power thrumming beneath my skin felt like a caged beast, clawing at the bars of my control. I tried to conjure the shimmering barrier, the defensive ward Ryan had described a hundred times. I saw it in my mind's eye, a perfect, translucent dome. But as I pushed, it warped. Instead of a protective shield, tendrils of inky blackness snaked out, twisting and writhing like sentient shadows. They lashed against the stone walls, leaving scorch marks that pulsed with a faint, malevolent light.

"No! Kael, stop!" Ryan’s voice was sharp, laced with a fear that mirrored my own. He raised his hands, a cascade of silver runes erupting from his fingertips, intercepting the dark tendrils just before they reached him. The runes flared, then dissolved, his spell clearly struggling against the sheer force of mine.
