A Cynical Savior
Bret encounters Ryan, a reclusive wizard skilled in ancient defenses. Ryan is initially wary but sees the potential danger Kael poses, and perhaps, a chance for redemption.
The air in the hovel was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and earthy that clung to the rough-hewn timbers like a second skin. It was a smell that spoke of forgotten rituals and a world that had long since turned its back on such things. I’d followed the whispers, the faint trails of residual magic, for days, my own power a raw, screaming thing within me, begging for an outlet, for understanding. And now, here I was, standing before a man who looked as weathered and unyielding as the mountains outside.
He was perched on a stool by a sputtering fire, his back to me, his movements economical as he stirred a dark, viscous liquid in a cast-iron pot. His hair was a tangled mess of iron-grey, and his robes, though simple, hung on him with an air of quiet authority. He didn't turn when I entered, didn't flinch at the tremor that ran through my own unstable magic, a tremor that always preceded my more… spectacular displays.
“You’re a long way from anywhere, boy,” he said, his voice a low rumble, like stones grinding together. He still hadn’t looked at me.
