The Shadow's Reach
A new, formidable antagonist or force appears, far more ancient and dangerous than the Obsidian Hand. This threat seems intrinsically linked to Bret's lineage and power.
The air in the derelict observatory tasted of dust and forgotten dreams. Moonlight, thin and spectral, bled through the shattered dome, painting skeletal patterns on the cracked stone floor. I clutched the obsidian shard, its surface cool and unnervingly smooth against my clammy palm. It pulsed with a faint, internal light, a thrumming echo of the power that now coursed, unbidden, through my veins. Ryan’s words, sharp with a familiar anxiety, still echoed in my mind. “This is beyond anything the Obsidian Hand has ever dealt with, Kael. This is… older.”
Older. The word itself was a shiver down my spine. The Obsidian Hand, with their sterile pronouncements and iron grip, had seemed like the apex of magical threat. But this… this felt different. It was a palpable dread, a suffocating weight that pressed in from the edges of my vision. The shard hummed, a low frequency that vibrated in my teeth, and the shadows in the room seemed to deepen, to writhe with a life of their own.
“Are you certain this is the place?” I whispered, my voice rough. The silence that answered was heavy, broken only by the skittering of unseen things in the debris.
