Ryan’s wards, usually a comforting blanket of ancient protection, felt like paper thin defenses against the storm brewing within me. He watched me, his face a mask of grim apprehension. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, were clouded with a familiar worry. He knew. He knew what I was capable of, and worse, he knew what I was becoming.
"You're pushing it too hard, Kael," he rasped, his voice tight. "You need to rein it in. This isn't a game."
