The Obsidian Hand is defeated, their secrets laid bare. Bret exposes the conspiracy, but the cost of victory is immense, leaving him irrevocably changed.
The acrid smoke still stung my eyes, a phantom reminder of the Obsidian Hand’s fortress crumbling around us. Debris lay scattered like broken teeth, the air thick with the scent of ozone and something else… something metallic and final. Daved was gone, his grand pronouncements silenced, his rigid order reduced to dust. We had won. But the victory tasted like ash.
Ryan, his face smudged with soot and a weariness that went bone-deep, leaned against a shattered stone pillar. His usual cynicism was replaced by a raw, exposed vulnerability. He’d seen too much, lost too much in the fight, and the weight of it all seemed to press down on his shoulders. “They’re scattered,” he rasped, his voice hoarse. “The Hand. What’s left of them won’t be a threat for a long time.”
I nodded, though the words offered little comfort. The Obsidian Hand was vanquished, their network dismantled, their leader a memory etched in the ruins. Yet, the true enemy, the conspiracy that had woven its tendrils through the very fabric of our magical world, remained. And the force that had driven their crusade – the fear of what I was – still pulsed in the silence.
