The air in the safe house tasted of stale fear and the cloying sweetness of Tony’s cheap incense. It was a scent I was beginning to associate with the unraveling of everything I thought I knew. Ryan sat across from me, her face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere exhaustion. Her fingers, usually so steady when weaving defensive wards, twitched as she traced invisible patterns on the scarred wooden table. We were supposed to be planning, strategizing, but the silence between us hummed with an unspoken tension.
"He's playing us, Kael," she said, her voice barely a whisper, as if afraid the walls themselves might be listening. "Tony. He’s always been like this, hasn't he? A puppet master pulling strings from the shadows."
I snorted, a harsh, humorless sound. "Playing us? He's been our only lifeline since… since everything fell apart. Who else do we have?" My gaze drifted to the bruised knuckles of my right hand, the phantom ache a constant reminder of the power I couldn't command.
